EcoPravo-Kyiv Environmental Law NGO
This independent non-governmental organization was founded in 1992 and registered in Department of Justice in the city of Kyiv in 1993. On? September? 1997 the organization acquired the status of legal entity.
In summer 1992 in Budapest, Hungary, Dutch non-governmental organization Milieukontakt Oost-Europa held a conference "Environmental Legislation and Legal Opportunities of NGOs in the Protection of Environment". Among the participants Borys Vassylkivsky represented Ukrainian NGOs . Rather interesting and somewhat unusual for that time the topic of the conference suggested him an idea of creating an environmental law non-governmental organization in Ukraine which would give an opportunity to protect environment not by means of public actions and pressure on governmental authorities but by means of environmental enforcement against violators of environmental legislation. Borys' idea was supported by Peter Roshchenko, a candidate of juridical science, who at that time taught environmental law at the Academy of Internal Affairs.
The first step of our activity in terms of research of the present status of environmental law problem and informing the public was publication of the first issue of "Environmental Law Newsletter" in December 1992 supported by the Dutch non-governmental organization Milieukontakt Oost-Europa and ISAR. In May 1993 again with the support of? Milieukontakt Oost-Europa, the first EcoPravo conference was held in Pheophania, near Kyiv. Among the participants of the conference were present now well-known heads of ECOPRAVO network organizations Svitlana Kravchenko (the President of EcoPravo-Lviv Foundation) and Olexiy Shumilo (the Head of EcoPravo-Kharkiv organization).
We would like to express our gratitude to the organizations which supported ECOPRAVO from the very beginning and afterwards became our partners and good friends - to Anna Maria (Milieukontakt Oost-Europa), Andriy Glazoviy (Unicorn), John Spolding (ISAR), Jay Austin (Institute of Environmental Law), John Bonine (E-LAW US) and others.
